Why you should adopt the CRM system Salesforce in your startup

Being a startup does not mean you can work in a disorganised way.
One of the very important tools that should be used in startups  (as much as in mature companies)  is an efficient CRM system.

So what is a CRM system for?

At the beginning of your startup, your CRM system may look like a phonebook. The more customers and prospects you will have, the more you will need to remember the exchanges you have with those customers and prospects and gather information about them.
Your outlook contact list will not tell you in a easy way how many customers you have, what are the major industries you are working with (in a B2B sector) or what is the average age of your customers (in the B2C sector).
The CRM system will help you to store information about your customers and understand who they are and what you have shared with them.
The sooner you start to use a CRM system the better as will be your understanding of your market.

Why Salesforce?

I always advise Salesforce in terms of CRM system for multiple reasons that we can recap in the following infography:

Reason 1: Easy to "install"
The first thing is that you don't need to install it because it is a cloud base application. You can access it directly with your web browser so you don't need a very efficient computer or pre requisites. All you need is a web browser and to be connected on internet.

Reason 2: You can work anywhere
Salesforce is also very useful when you want to work anywhere. You can be connected on your computer at your desk and then add some notes about a customer you just met on the Salesforce One app on your mobile or on the classic version of Salesforce on your Ipad.
If multiple people need access on your Salesforce, it is all centralised so any update you do is instantly visible by the other users of your organisation.

Reason 3: A very customisable tool
I also advise Salesforce because it is highly configurable and in a lot of cases some simple "clicks" are enough to add fields and workflows so it fits to your business processes. There are a lot of configurations you can do on your own without having an administrator or a Salesforce developer. When you will get bigger, then you can start thinking about more personalised developments.

Reason 4: It provides you some very useful dashboards and gives you access to a good reporting tool
It is not a BI tool but still it gives you the capability to run interesting reports to understand your business. You can customise the reports and the dashboards as much as needed without having any technical knowledge. It is not the greatest reporting tool but provides all the features to make it simple, easy to use and efficient. A lot of Salesforce competitors do not provide this level of reporting.

Reason 5: A rich App store
If your needs are more complicated than few clicks, you will be very happy to have a look at the very rich Salesforce app store - the App Exchange - where you find a very rich range of applications to answer to all sorts of needs: marketing, social media, integrated phone system, event modules, sales performance modules,...
This is important when you are at the beginning of your startups as you need to "customise" your CRM system to be able to manage some specific needs and may not have a budget to hire a developer to develop bespoke features for you.

Reason 6: I heard a multiple times people saying that it is an expensive tool.
To be fair:

  • If you have less than 10 users, you will probably just need the "Group" license of Salesforce (which gives you everything you need to manage your accounts, leads and opportunities), which costs around 25$ per user per month. it is basically the cost of a phone subscription.  Very quickly you may want to move on the Enterprise license with will cost you 125$ per user per month but you don't need to get to that level until multiple months of activity.
  • If you have 100 users than the bill will be much higher than for 3 users but if you have that level of users, it is generally not a problem to afford it. In addition if you think about the cost if you had to maintain a bespoke CRM system on a dedicated server with dedicated developers, you will realise that the difference is not that big.

Reason 7: Salesforce is one of the main leaders in CRM systems (if not the first). If your company is being sold in few years, using a good CRM tool like Salesforce will reassure the investors and future buyers. It gives you a certain credibility - much more than some other CRMs available in the market.

I hope this helped you to see the advantages of that tool.
